Last year, I interviewed Candy Evans and Lori Robbins of Delray Beach, Florida, who--it's not an exaggeration to say--brought their church back to life by planting a community garden that is tended by families with kids, folks in their '80s, and homeless members of the community. Click here to be inspired by the interview.
I just got a message from Candy checking in after the winter and delivering some exciting news about Cason. Here's what she wrote:
"It was crazy here--within a 30-day period we had record heat in December (92 degrees), lots of freezing rain, high winds, frost, and record cold temperatures we haven’t seen since 1927. Throughout it all, the gardeners responded quickly and were attentive in covering their plots to minimize damage. Now, we are in full harvest mode and hope to deliver 600 pounds of produce to our local soup kitchen."
Wow! Congrats to Candy, Lori, and team for persevering through weird and random weather, all for the cause of being able to help those who are hungry, and for bringing the community together in the process!
Candy forwarded on some photos of the garden's beautiful raised beds, first exposed to the elements, the protected from them.
Do you know a "grower in the spirit," someone who's transformed church or synagogue property into an edible, community-building landscape? Please share your stories!
