This just in - my hanging lettuce planter appears to actually be working. Despite the doubts that I had when I set the thing up (click here if you want a doubt-list reminder), the warm weather and sweet sunshine we've been enjoying have worked their magic on this rapidly greening sphere. I think these could even officially qualify as "baby greens!"
As happens so often in a garden, this experiment has been an exercise in hope, faith, and patience. I wasn't sure how--or if--it would work, but it was something I believed was possible, and therefore was worth trying. I gave it water and a good sunny spot, but largely left it to its own devices, and what do you know? It took hold, took root. Gravity, shmavity!
Have you done any garden experimentation this spring? How has it gone?
I have! I've planted 5 heads of lettuce in a windowbox in my kitchen-- and, so far so good! I've been wondering how much sunshine lettuce needs (it's getting day-long indirect light) and how much water (lately, been watering every other day) and not sure if that's all correct but nothing has shriveled yet... any lettuce insight you have is welcomed!
Next up: a hanging planter of cherry tomatoes! Do you think they'd hang down or just grow upwards?
Also, I kind of love how my kitchen is becoming an indoor garden. "Grow where we are planted" and all that...
